Taxability for 2017

Taxability for 2017

Koniag is issuing the following informational forms to Shareholders to report 2017 payments:

1099 DIV  – A portion of the January 2017 Dividend (approximately 10%) is considered to be taxable income and will be reported on a Form 1099 DIV.  Under IRS rules, if the taxable portion is less than $10, we are not required to send out a 1099 DIV; however, the amount should still be reported as taxable income on the recipient’s tax return. The 1099 DIV will also include payments disbursed in 2017 for an estate that is now settled which relate to a prior year when the distribution was taxable.

1099 MISC  – Shareholders will receive a 1099 MISC for the amount of the June 2017 7(i) distribution to all Class B shareholders which will be reported in Box 3.  In addition, the amount of any prizes or awards received (such as stock will or early bird) will also be reported on that 1099 MISC in Box 3.

Koniag will mail IRS forms 1099-MISC and 1099-DIV (if applicable) to Shareholders by the required due date of January 31, 2018 for the 2017 tax year.  If you have not received your form, please contact the Shareholder Department so that your address can be verified.

Koniag cannot provide tax advice and Shareholders are encouraged to consult with a tax advisor regarding individual circumstances.

Additional information regarding 1099’s received from Koniag

Tis the tax season! Koniag mailed IRS 1099 forms to Shareholders for 2017 by January 31, 2018. Some may have received more than one type of 1099 form.

A 1099-DIV form was sent to most shareholders who received a January 2017 dividend. That 1099-DIV is reportable on Schedule B of the tax return in the Dividends section.

A 1099-MISC form was sent to shareholders that hold Class B stock. The amounts reported are the June 2017 distribution of 7(j) monies plus any estate settlements monies that were accumulated on Class B shares. In addition, we reported prizes such as early bird or stock will drawings on the 1099-MISC.

The amounts on the 1099-MISC from box 3 should be reported on Line 21 of the federal form 1040 which is the same line where Alaska PFD is reported. Those funds are NOT subject to self-employment tax. IRS instructions stipulate that Form 1040A is not the proper form to use if a 1099-MISC was received.

It is the responsibility of the Shareholder to accurately report Koniag income on the tax returns. Koniag cannot provide tax advice; however, there are some useful resources. The IRS website at https://www.irs.gov/filing contains valuable information. The AARP also has resources for assisting with filing taxes at https://www.aarp.org/money/taxes/info-2018/aarp-tax-help-fd.html?intcmp=AE-MON-BB-TAXAIDE. If using a tax preparation software, we recommend contacting the customer support for that software and ask for their assistance.

Sharing the Catch with our Elders

The act of sharing embodies the Alutiiq cultural values of generosity and selflessness. In Alutiiq communities, providers share their catch with others, and all community members are valued for the various ways they share their catch. As a community, we celebrate the sacrifice and commitment of our providers, honor our interdependence on each other, and remember that resources must be sustained to catch or provide for future generations.
At Koniag we recognize that each person’s contribution is vital to the overall success of the Corporation. “We celebrate and appreciate our original Elder Shareholders whose hard work and dedication established Koniag,” said President Shauna Hegna. “Their hard work yesterday, makes it possible for the Corporation to share its catch with Shareholders today.”
On February 10, 2018, the Board of Directors declared an annual Elder dividend of $500. This dividend will be paid to original Koniag Shareholders who are 65 years of age or older on September 30, 2018, the date of record. Checks will be mailed on or by November 1, 2018. A notice will be sent to qualifying Shareholders several weeks before the date of record to give Elders time to update their banking and mailing information.
“This Elder dividend is given in gratitude of those who have given so much to our communities and our people,” said Ron Unger, Koniag Chairman and Interim CEO. “It makes me proud that our Board makes decisions that embody our Alutiiq cultural values of caring for our Elders and sharing the catch.”

Reminder: The Koniag Candidate Nominee Information Forms are due on Friday, March 16, at 5:00 p.m. (Alaska time).

Please note a minor printing error in the Shareholder newsletter, which states the form is due on “Monday, March 16”. Because March 16 falls on Friday all nominee forms are due this Friday, March 16. We are pretty sure this error is a result of losing an hour this week. #DaylightSavingsBrain
